You’ve never met anyone like me before. These are words I hear so frequently. Gamblers by nature, who are ready to accept help, have beaten themselves up so much, have destroyed so much, that actually, when it comes to getting help, they think they are the lowest of the low, the best of the worst, the biggest scumbag going.
But the reality is far more nuanced. When you meet someone in recovery, you are not meeting a broken person; you are meeting a survivor. You are meeting someone who has waged war on their own mind and is standing in front of you with the scars to prove it. The journey of recovery is not just about abstaining from the next bet. It’s about rebuilding, redefining, and reclaiming one’s life from the clutches of addiction.
As a compulsive gambler in recovery since 2006, I understand the depths of despair and the peaks of hope. Every day is a testament to resilience, to the human spirit’s ability to rise, rebuild, and flourish. My role as a Service User Engagement Lead allows me to walk alongside others on their journey, offering support, understanding, and a reminder that they are not alone.
Addiction doesn’t discriminate, but recovery is possible for everyone. It requires immense courage to face your demons, to acknowledge your failures, and to work towards a better tomorrow. For those battling addiction, know this: your past does not define you. Your strength to seek help, to make changes, and to strive for a better life is what truly matters.
To anyone reading this, if you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction, remember that help is available. There is no shame in seeking support. Together, we can build a community of recovery, where no one has to walk the path alone.
