Why People Might Hesitate to Seek Help
We understand that taking the first step can be incredibly daunting. Many people hesitate to seek help for reasons such as:
- Fear of Judgment: Worrying about what others might think or say.
- Denial: Not fully recognizing the extent of the problem
- Shame and Guilt: Feeling embarrassed or guilty about their behavior
- Uncertainty: Not knowing where to start or what to expect from the recovery process
- Previous Negative Experiences: Having had unhelpful or harmful experiences with previous attempts at seeking help

- Privacy Concerns: Fearing that seeking help will lead to a loss of privacy.
- Fear of Change: Anxiety about what life will be like without the addiction.
- Lack of Awareness: Not knowing what resources are available.
- Perceived Stigma: Believing that seeking help will label them as weak or flawed.
- Financial Concerns: Worrying about the cost of treatment or financial consequences of admitting a problem.
From the Brink: How I Overcame Gambling Addiction and Found Purpose
I know how you feel.
Fear of judgment. Shame and guilt. Privacy concerns. The anxiety of change. The uncertainty of where to even start. I felt every single one of these before seeking help. They kept me trapped in the cycle for years, convincing me that stopping wasn’t possible—or that I didn’t deserve to stop.
Welcome to The Gambling Recovery Hub, a space dedicated to helping individuals break free from gambling addiction and reclaim their lives. After 20 years as an active gambler, 18 years in recovery, and 17 years working in gambling support, I understand how destructive this addiction can be—and how hard it is to take those first steps toward change.
If you feel trapped in the cycle, unsure whether you’re ready to stop, or overwhelmed by shame and regret, you’re not alone. That’s why The Gambling Recovery Hub exists—to support you whether you’re contemplating change or ready to take action.
My Journey Through Addiction
For two decades, gambling consumed me. I lost everything—my wife, home, career, reputation, and, most painfully, my self-worth. Desperate choices led to criminal convictions, adding to the weight of my addiction. I knew my life was spiraling out of control, but stopping felt impossible.
In 2006, I hit rock bottom—homeless, broke, and starving. The thought of carrying on felt more unbearable than the idea of giving up entirely. With nothing left, I walked into Gordon Moody’s Residential Rehabilitation program. It wasn’t hope that brought me there—it was desperation.
Facing the truth was brutal. I had to confront the wreckage, strip away every excuse, and accept that recovery was about more than just stopping gambling. It was about rebuilding my belief that I was worth saving.
Leaving treatment in 2007, I wasn’t just gambling-free—I had a reason to live again.
From Recovery to Helping Others
Recovery didn’t stop when I left Gordon Moody. I dedicated my life to helping others break free from addiction, eventually becoming Service User Engagement Lead, working with people who feel stuck in the same impossible place I once was.
But I knew more needed to be done. That’s why I created The Gambling Recovery Hub—to reach people before they’re ready for treatment, before they think they deserve help, and before gambling takes everything.
We’re not here to tick boxes or follow a script. Our support and advice come from real experience, not just training. We’ve walked this path, felt the same struggles, and understand what it takes to move forward. As long as you’re prepared to work with us, we’ll give you our full attention, every step of the way.
People deserve help and support on a pathway that feels impossible. And let me be clear—you do deserve help. No matter where you are right now, no matter what’s happened in the past, you are worth saving, and you don’t have to do this alone.
Wherever you are in your journey, we’re here for you. We understand your concerns and fears—we have lived them and acknowledge just how debilitating they can be .
The Gambling Recovery Hub: A Different Approach to Gambling Support
Many people struggling with gambling addiction aren’t ready to commit to recovery. And I get it— We’ve been there.
Maybe you’ve already called a gambling helpline and been handed a few self-exclusion links or told to install gambling blocking software. And while these tools can help, they don’t touch the real problem.
- They don’t address the fear that keeps you trapped.
- They don’t quiet the panic that rises when you think about stopping.
- They don’t tackle the ambivalence—the part of you that still clings to gambling, even as it destroys everything around you.
That’s where The Gambling Recovery Hub is different.
Here, there’s no pressure, no judgment, no lectures—just real conversations with people who’ve been where you are.
We help you:
✅ Explore why you continue to gamble and what’s keeping you stuck
✅ Explore your options before you’re “ready” to quit
✅ Break down barriers stopping you from getting professional help
✅ Find the right support—and if you need a referral, I’ll even fill out the form for you
Getting Help Shouldn’t Be Another Battle
I’m not here to drag you through your past. I’m not here to offer therapy.
I’m here for something much simpler—but just as important: to help you take an honest look at why you might want to stop, what’s stopping you, and how to move forward.
Because the truth is, most people know their gambling is out of control long before they ever say it out loud. The hardest part isn’t stopping—it’s facing the fear, the shame, and the uncertainty of what comes next.
That’s why The Gambling Recovery Hub exists.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. I’ll help you break down the barriers, see the options in front of you, and connect you to the right support.
And if making that first move feels impossible? I’ll even complete the referral form for you. Because getting help shouldn’t be another mountain to climb.
You Don’t Have to Be “Ready.” You Just Have to Start.
Recovery doesn’t require you to have it all figured out.
You don’t have to be 100% ready. You just have to take one step. And when you do, I’ll be here.
If you’re struggling with gambling addiction, if you feel stuck, lost, or afraid of what comes next—reach out.
You are not alone.
